Come to the event of the year in Somerville, Massachusetts! One of the largest open studio events in the country, we even have a trolley to bring you around. Poke your head in interesting home studios, artist buildings with multiple studios, and a community space with many more artists. Have lunch in one of Somerville's many restaurants. It's a fun weekend to see a wide variety of art. I will be at 6 Vernon Street Studios on the 2nd Floor. Hope to see you there!
The Sculptural Book: Using Woodworking to Create a Shaped Book
Friday-Sunday, July 15-17 (3 sessions)
8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Instructor: Johanna Finnegan-Topitzer
In this workshop, explore the meeting of disciplines and push the boundaries of bookmaking. Book covers can be made out of many different materials and do not have to be rectangular in shape. Using woodworking tools, students create shaped books with wooden covers. Students create two models to start and then have a chance to get creative and explore. This class covers the basics of bookbinding and uses simple woodworking machines.
"CALL OF THE WILD"
An addition to the public art of Somerville, Massachusetts! This phone box art pays tribute to the urban wildlife found around the city if you are patient and look closely. The raccoon walks along a chain link fence as house sparrows peek from the diamond shaped made by the linking wires. A pair of cardinals fly by on the way to a neighborhood feeder. A skunk (somehow) got on top of someone's garage. And a brown bat chases a moth in front of some triple-decker houses by the light of the moon.
Thank you to the Somerville Arts Council and the Nave Gallery for sponsoring this project and encouraging artists around the city to fill up those now empty phone boxes. This one can be viewed around the side of City Line Laundromat, 110 Broadway, Somerville, MA.
